Wang Xiaobo, a rather talented contemporary Chinese writer, was born in 1952 and died on April 11, 1997. He was the only Chinese writer in the mainland of China who gained twice the Taiwan Unite Newspapers literature nouvelle prize. His novels drew much appreciation from abroad but received little attention in the mainland of China till his death. After Wang's death, there ever rose a fit on the study of him. However, more research is done on his thoughts than on the literary aspects of his works. In the eye of the critics, Wang is more a free thinker than a master in the art of novel. In this thesis, the author focuses on Wang's literary creation, trying to rehabilitate his identity as a free writer. Adopting a Sino-west comparative perspective, the author intends to discuss his narration art and view on literature. Chapter 1 is a general review about the influence Wang received from western literature. Chapter 2 and 3 looks into the characteristics of Wang's narration: his carnivalized narration and witticized narration, the influence on his narration and literary idea from the west, and his exploration and creation on the infinite possibility of novel writing, which reveals his open and pluralistic view on literature. All in all, Wang, with his liberal humanism, transcended the Chinese traditional humanism.
