According to the usual practice of literature phases and the factual situation of critical object, the author, in this thesis, intends to make an overall description for Chen Y ing- s ontfs novella creation based on dividing it into three different stages in a historical way: In the middle and late 1980's, Chen Ying- s ong's certain novellas such as Black Forecastle have apparent character of seeking root of civilization, and the first chapter of the thesis will mainly discuss how the cultural symbolic structure of Roots-seeking literature is built through a particular ideographic way and how it eventually disintegrates in a secular society; Exploring the ultimate value of individual being in the sense of loneliness and anxiety for the losing of historical purpose is the consistent main idea of Chen Y ing- s ong's novellas in 1990's, Therefore, emphases of the second chapter in this thesis will be placed on analysis of the two different value orientations and spiritual journeys of contemporary intellectuals by comparing Returning to Where You Leave with Snowy Branches-, After a long period of preparation and accumulation of living, thinking and writing, recently, ChenYing-song reaches the apex of his career in a series original fictions of ShennongJia. The third chapter will point out the evolution track of this new novella series' subjects from symbolic existentialism to realistic critique as a whole. Besides, the thesis will firstly make some proper interpretations on the social, ideological and literary backgrounds in each chapter.
