The thesis focuses on the Europeanized Chinese Constructions in Bawang Bie Ji and Jinsuo Ji. The study, as it is assumed, attempts to identify the effects English language has performed in written Chinese in terms of syntactics and stylistics, observe how Zhang Ailing makes choices among various Europeanized Chinese constructions and the reasons that have motivated the choices, have a discussion on what is "Europeanized but fragmented" and "Europeanized and naturalized" Chinese constructions, and finally, open up the prospect for the trend of development of Europeanized Chinese constructions, in the hope that it might be conductive to the research on Zhang Ailing and her works, the better understanding and appropriate application of Europeanized Chinese constructions, and the healthy development of modern Chinese. The thesis first introduces the theoretical background of this study, and presents a clear account of the origin of the Europeanized Chinese constructions and academic attitudes towards them. Then it introduces the life review and writing story of Zhang Ailing, which has been followed by an explication of the reasons for the author's choice of Zhang as the research object and Bawang Bie Ji and Jinsuo Ji as the target research cases. The main body of this thesis focuses on the analysis of the interrelations between the discourse patterning in Bawang Bie Ji and Jinsuo Ji and the linguistic choices of Europeanized Chinese constructions, which naturally leads to the finding that mature writers do not passively accept all the Europeanized Chinese constructions but make choices of them in terms of discourse patterning. Finally the study comes to the conclusionas follows:Europeanized but fragmented Chinese constructions lack succinctness and terseness, bring about confusion and chaos in logic, hold back readers, increase memory burden and inhibit the understanding of writing artistry. While Europeanized and naturalized Chinese constructions have overcome all the above-mentioned disadvantages, and moreover, give a push to the enhancement of the writing theme, help shape the images of the characters in the story, and enrich expressiveness of Chinese language.
