| D·H·Lawrence is one of the most important novelists in the earlier 20th century in Britain. He is also a controversial writer of both praise and dispraise for long. Lawrence was born when Britain's industrialization had just finished Industrial civilization and the pursuit of economic value resulted in alienated human beings. The relationship of men and women were destroyed. Lawrence believed that society should restore to the natural state. The core of the problem on which he reflected was the sexual relationships and what Lawrence concerned more was the problem of women. Lawrence lived in the time when the women's liberation movement was on the upsurge in Britain. Influenced by this movement, Lawrence tried to be a spokesman of women. Owing to his persistent attention to the women problem, Lawrence created many different female images in his literary life of a writer. Among these, Ursula Brangwen in The Rainbow and Women in Love is a representative. She pursues truth, and fights with the unfair society. Though defeated again and again, she never gives it up. At last she grows into a new female with modern consciousness. She is an ideal woman in Lawrence's eyes, shows his view on women. This thesis probes into Lawrence's unique view on women based on an analysis of the image of Ursula and a comparison between Ursula and other women characters. Through the analysis and comparison, we see that Lawrence cared much about women's emotion, psychology and fate and fully understood these elements. Meanwhile, Lawrence's main concern was always with the human future. Lawrence's idea about women is unique and unmatched, he advanced the historical and social understanding of women and human future..Part I the analysis of the character of UrsulaUrsula is the most ideal woman in Lawrence's thought. This thesis approaches the development of modern consciousness of characterization of Ursula from two aspects— society and marriage. From the social point of view, Ursula's modern consciousness is embodied in her rebelliousness and exploration; from married point of view, Ursula's modern consciousness is reflected in her unique understanding of love and her striving after sweet married life. She acquires a perfect understanding of herself through sufferings and frustration and improves herself. Eventually, she develops into an outstanding representative of women in Lawrence's age.Part II the comparison between Ursula and other women charactersDifferentiation comes from comparison. In this thesis, a comparison has been made between Ursula and other women images created by Lawrence and other famous writers. These women all love their life, aspire after sweet love, and possess very strong rebelliousness. However, owing to their different nations and respective experiences, their female consciousness results in completely different ending. Through this comparison, we can understand Ursula and the significance of this woman better.Part III Lawrence's view on womenLawrence is not a feminist and doesn't hold male chauvinism either. His view on women is embodied in the way of saying "keeping balance between two stars"--- put forward by Lawrence in Women in Love--- which means harmony and happiness, equality and freedom. He hopes that men play their roles, while women play their own. They should be independent. He believes that when modern women struggle for and win equal status and social rights, they should return to their true state as female and keep this unique feature. His concept agrees with the principles of humanity.Lawrence was always studying and expressing women problems. Owing to different ages and nations, distinctive culture and belief, there may be different understanding of Lawrence's ideas. However, his view on the development of women's self-consciousness is positive. His idea of "returning to nature" is reminding human beings of our natural gender which has been disregarded as the society is stepping into a highly civilized age. Hence Lawrence has given us a serious warning and... |
