Review on current affairs(often shortened as review) has long been an important part in mass media in our country, yet no linguist has ever carried out studies in this g enre from the perspective of language use.This thesis attempts to utilize the theory of pragmatics and illustrates the pragmatic laws that govern the genre of review by studying the relationships between the style and context, pragmatic meaning, presupposition and speech act.In this thesis, the contextual mobility of the review style is first illustrated, folio wed by the illustration of the relationships of different contexts such as binding and c rearing, determining and coordinating, complementing and omitting. When analyzing the pragmatic implicature of the review style, the author demonstrates the charm of re views with an analysis of the encoding and decoding process of discourse marker. An analysis of the presuppostions for reviews, which is indispensible to the decoding pro cess, shows that there are three kinds of pragmatic presupposition, namely, the knowl edge presupposition, the perspective presupposition and the standpoint presupposition , all of which are the logical premise of writing reviews, they are of great value to the decoding of the materials being reviewed and the pragmatic encoding in the writing of review.Besides, as a stategy of language use, review should follow the cooperative p rinciple and the relevance maxim no matter it is commissive or representative.The demonstration above aims at the revelation of the magic of language use in e ncoding and decoding reviews , thus providing a guidance for the authors to write a nd the readers to appreciate review.
