Poem on painting is a distinctive flower in the garden of ancient Chinese poetry. It combines the poetic mood and painting mood and becomes a important sign of the combination and interaction of these two kinds of art. Poem on painting began in Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei Dynasty, and became prosperous in Tang Dynasty. Compared with a vast accumulation of all the poems of Tang Dynasty, the amount of poems on paintings written by over 100 poets is not very large, only about 200, but their cultural value and aesthetic value can not be neglected. Poems on paintings of Tang Dynasty are a precious treasure of ancient Chinese traditional culture, so they are worth studying and exploring. The author of the thesis tries to analyze these poems in aspects of range of subjects, ideology, artistic value and the influence on later ages, etc.The whole paper is divided into 3 chapters. The first chapter discusses the definition and the origin of poem on painting on the basis of the current achievements in this field. In a broad sense, poem on painting refers to all the poems for paintings, including those directly written on pictures by artists themselves and those written by the audience who has many thoughts and feelings to express after appreciating pictures. In narrow sense, poem on painting only refers to the poems that the artist writes on his pictures in calligraphy hand. This tradition of writing poems on pictures began in Song Dynasty and became prosperous in Yuan Dynasty, Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty. It has not only promoted the combination of poetry, calligraphy and painting, but also has improved the aesthetic effect of works of art. Poem on painting in a broad sense began in Wei-Jin-Nan-Bei Dynasty. In this period of time, both poetry and painting art have greatly developed, especially the painting art which has got its independent artistic value. Therefore, it provided a very good environment for the development of poem on painting. Some poems for painted screen written by Xiao Yi and Yu Xin were representatives at that time. Even though the poems on paintings on those days were not mature, they laid good foundations for further development in Tang dynasty.The second chapter deals with the poems on paintings of Tang Dynasty in details. It covers the historical background, the division of subjects, the historic value, the value of artistic theory and the social function of this special art form. Tang Dynasty was not only the golden time for poetry, but also for the art of painting. At that time, there weremany well-known artists, and the traditional division of Chinese painting subjects--portrait, landscape and flower-and-bird painting, began to take shape. Furthermore, some comparatively valuable works of painting theory had come on the scene. This flourishing of culture and art in Tang Dynasty led to the rise and prosperity of poem on painting. The subjects of this kind of poems can be divided into 3 parts, appreciating the works of art, commenting on artists and reflecting on how artists did their work. These poems concern about lots of information of works of art and artists and even put forward some creative theories of the artistic creation and appreciation. What's more, poem on painting of Tang Dynasty has strong social function. It reflects the social life and people's spiritual activities of a certain period of time. Therefore, it provides a reliable basis for us to study the social reality and aesthetic interests of that time.The third chapter discusses the influence of poems on paintings of Tang Dynasty on poetry and painting of later ages. Some of these poems took the likeness and realism seriously, some of them gave the still picture a mobile angle, some of them sought after the meaning and image beyond the picture and some of them expressed the writer's strong emotion and ideal. These distinguished features of the writing techniques had greatly influenced later ages.
