| Jatakas is one of the important subjects employed in Dunhuang murals, which has lasted for almost 1000 years with the historical process of the Mogao grottoes. In the different historical culture background, Jataka murals artistic expressing form also reflects the process of evolution clearly. Based on the extent Jataka murals, the thesis aims to analyze and discuss the style and space of Jataka murals imploying the relevant artistic theories home, aboard, and ideas from Buddhist history, culture history, and art history.On discussing the uprising, spreading, and style category of Jataka murals, the author believes that the variety of Jataka story is resulted from exotic influence, localization, and the style of mainland. Hence, the space made by those styles has 4 characteristics: a. flexible; b. ornamental; c. symbolical; d. national. Those 4 characteristics present the same united plain space appearance of china. The uprising and changing of such space appearance within historical environment has profound cause .The style and space of Jataka murals is the inevitable result of the unbreaking development of history in spit of it's investor, it's material condition, and the attitude of public .It finally reveals the return and unity of space appearance, and the mature process of the prone of Chinese localization, i.e., the dynamic show of space awareness promoted by spirit-resonance life-motion. To some extent, the thesis can be considered an exploration of culture bearence and the significance of spirit directing of Chinese painting space.Talking about the space of painting, it's impossible not to discuss perspective. Comparing Chinese conception of the space of paintings, with that of the west, the thesis puts forward a scientific theory to support the Chinese space form in paintings.In short, such a study of Jataka murals has great value and current significance .The author finally calls on people to add Grotto art in Chinese art education and to deepen such research. This will create a new stage of inheriting and developing Chinese painting. |
