Commonality is eternal. The popularity of Ailing Zhang's works is closely linked to their commonality, which is the result of the author's commonality standpoint. This paper attempts to examine Ailing Zhang's commonality standpoint from three aspects: the presentation, formation and inclination of this standpoint.Commonality can be found in all of Ailing Zhang's works. Both her proses and novels embody an artistic view characteristic of nongovernmental consciousness. The formation of this standpoint is an involved process, during which her parents and her aunt had exerted the most important influence upon her. After liberation, with the old-fashioned metropolitan Shanghai disappearing, Ailing Zhang completely lost her freedom, both in spirit and action. The final failure in Xiao 'ai and The 18th Spring-two attempts to cater for the political context of 1949, marked the inclination and even total loss of her commonality standpoint.
