Women has always been a permanent subject of writers. Almost every good book is connected with the shaping of female figures. And women's fate is connected with the age in which they live. In The Sound and the Fury, the author shapes such figures as Ketty, Mrs Kempson , Dirrsy and Small Kunding. Understanding these figures is important to understanding the writer's writing purpose.I.On Ketty·Kempson ----The Representative Of Female TragedyKetty lives in the south where slavery occupies a controlling position. In such a society, women's virginity is very important to them. Women are men's accessories. Men's ownership of women is mostly embodied by the women's virginity. Women have low position in the south. They are not respected and are asked by the society to obey men ,be obedient to men. Their opinions and ideas are always controlled and influenced by the society's traditional moral values. They should not have their own requirements. They are asked to control their sexual requirements, to regard sexual requirements as a shame. The members of the Kempson family are all supporters of the southern system. As a member of the Kempson family, Ketty is bound to be affected by her family's ideas. When she was young, Ketty is sympathetic, thoughtful towards others. She always understands and kelps with the poor and the weak. She creates a quiet and beautiful world for her brothers and takes the responsibility of taking care of them. She shows concern for Bangy and tries her best to satisfy his needs. She also gives the other two brothers the courage to live on. But the gentle and couragerous girl can only give love. She can not receive any love. Her love has no return. When she becomes mature, she wants to be after some things which belongs to girls such as beautiful clothes and perfume, but her brothers make special efforts to prevent her from doing so. Because they know once she gets such things ,it means that she will leave them. The author shows by Kunding's complaints, Bangy's cries and Jesson's anger that the three brothers try to prevent Ketty's personal pursuit. This makes Ketty unable to receive any love or warmth in the family. In Ketty's heart, there is a strong sense of rebellion. When she is young , she is brave. She desires to break the family's restriction of her and get love and freedom, thus live a normal person's life. As she becomes mature, she begins to have a vague sexual sense. She likes to spread perfume on her body and get in touch with boys. She begins to show interest in the opposite sex. As she becomes mature, sexual desires become the overwhelming factor. At that time the idea of sexual liberation is spreading throughout the whole society. As a member of the society, Ketty is necessarily affected by such ideas. When she walks into the society , she is only in her teens, she cannot understand the trap laid by the society for her. Under such circumstances , she walks into the forbidden place and thus begins her tragic fate. On the other hand, Mr Emice looks down upon women, which shows that there will not be true love between Ketty and him. Meanwhile, because of her life experiences, Ketty has a strong sense of independence. She is unwilling just to be attached to the men's world. Thus, the love basis between her and Emice is very unsteady. When her love meets with trouble, she is indecisive and gives herself in to the society. After the first sexual experience, she considers it evil but unable to get rid of it. In the end, she gives herself in completely and becomes a street girl. Ketty is the victim of her family. In a sense , Ketty lives not for herself but for her family members. She sacrifices herself in order to maintain the existence of the family and maintain the honor of the family. But her family members take her sacrifice for granted. Once Ketty stops such sacrifice, they will consider it abnormal. Therefore, to be unable to receive love is Ketty's largest pity.In the south, people are strict with women's virginity. In contrast with this...
