Virginia Woolf is one of the initiators of the novels of stream of consciousness. While stream of consciousness is supposed to be the significant part of Woolf's bold experiment in art , rather than stream of consciousness, poetic in nature is the essence throughout her writing .From her first novel The Voyage Out to her last novel Between the Acts ,poetic features intrude into the text, which are best conveyed in Mrs. Dalloway ,To the Lighthouse and The Waves .As is said by Foster, she is an unique poet who used poetry of fiction as her medium.Woolf's poetic character derives from her family inheritance ,artistic atmosphere ,excellent literary tradition ,and on the other hand ,mainly from her conscious pursue for the lyric qualities ,which results in the establishment of a set of distinct and integrate aesthetic theories in her acceptance and probing .For her parts ,literature is supposed to be an retrospective aesthetic activity, the view of which is the theoretical base of Woolf's poetic writing. So called "poetry of fiction" doesn't mean that the exterior form of poem( namely ,arrangement in lines) is applied, but mean accomplishing the novels by the skills of poetry ,language of poetry and perspective of poetry.Poetry of fiction is specifically revealed in poetic perspective , symbolism ,lyricism and association .perspective of poetic fiction is the perspective of poetry in that it is not microcosmic , concrete, but macroscopic , abstract ,which differs from fiction ,mainly focusing on the philosophically reflection on human fate and the prospect for fantasy and ambition instead of portraiting the figures, narrating the story. It is non-individual. On top of this ,Woolf adopted scattering perspective ,changing the angles a lot ,stressing on expressing the subjective world .Simultaneously ,borrowed from the poetry, approach of expressing the emotion by describing the landscape is used to reinforce the subjective world ,words for scene being the words for emotion .Full of lyrical flavor, her works reveals her clear idea of what one should hate or love ,especially in the whole paragraphs of lyric monologue which can be compared to lyric poems ,expressing the most subtle feeling , graceful beyond comparison ,touching you deeply in the heart ,while the interspersed exclamatory sentences heighten and reinforce the emotional coloring .Woolf transplant the symbolism ,the most striking characteristic of poetry ,into her novels ,in which what runs below the surface of imagery is the poetically resonating texture of its symbolic structure ,leading to magnificently conceived prospect and penetrating thesis. However ,symbolism brings about obscure and uncertainty as well, but obscure doesn't affect the charm of her writings ,on the contrary, it adds to the beauty of being somnolent. Association spread from points to surfaces ,starting and ending easily. It is not in quest for deep insight, but for the surface touch ,which is most eligible for expressing the image and feeling ,hence it is widely used in poetry. The dim impression of association echoes in skimming over the surface of the poetry, rich in meaning ,bearing the tolerance of macroscopic perspective .In general, the poetic nature in Woolf's fictions takes on the climbing trend ,from Jacob's Room to The Waves ,being more and more striking ,gradually approaching the summit so much so that it goes to the extreme .It is the unique nature of Woolf's poetry of fiction that results in the necessity that we have to form the different habit of appreciation from the usual way we use in reading the conventional fictions ,that is to weigh and consider like reading poetry .Woolf's poetry of fiction is a necessary product of change in time and renewal of literature conception instead of an accidental phenomenon .The novelists deeply felt that traditional realistic approach could far from express such a turbulent outside world and human's inner mind ,as a result, each writer of modernism found a different breakthrough point in liter...
