The purpose of news reporting is to inform people of what has happened lately in the world. The translation of English news aims to provide news to target audience. With a great amount of available English news covering every aspect of society, it is not practical to translate all of the information because time is limited and target audience would not be interested in it. This dissertation aims at exploring the principles of news translation from the relevance-theory perspective: what should be communicated in news translation, how successful communication is achieved and what is the identification of successful communication. The study is carried out through the analysis the news text and its translation from the view of relevance theory.Relevance is context-dependent. Concerning with target audience's cognitive environment, what is communicated in translation should be the information which is relevant enough, and the irrelevant information should be missed out. The translation of relevant information must interpretively resemble the original in relevant respects. They share their explicatiures and implicatures in the same context. To reduce target audience's processing effort, the original information structure should be put into translation and the target text must meet news stylistics. The translator should convey right original contextual assumption in target text to offer contextual effect. Thus what is communicated and how to achieve successful communication should be in consistency with the principle of relevance.
