The Solely Development In The Confluence Of Chinese And Western Poetic Theory-a Modern Perspective Of The Modern Chinese Ballads

Given birth after the May 4th movement, the modern Chinese ballads is due to embody modern features endowed by the specific situation. These valuable features, however, fail to be examined and defined by reviewers systematically, generally and scientifically for a long time. So far, the author of this thesis contends it is necessary to clarify this topic a little to attract more attention from experts.The origin of modern Chinese ballads is as complex as that of lyrics. Its modern features dates back to the following factors: the necessity of the specific epic, the needs and enthusiasm of modern ballads, the mature experience of western ballads, the vernacular Chinese possible for free writing by the new generation of ballad writers.The modern features of Chinese ballads rely in two interfaces: the modernity of value-orientation and conveying strategy. The former refers to the modern approach of the subject matters of modern Chinese ballads for 30 years. The latter is the modern characteristic of their writing skills. The combination of them generates the modern feature of modern Chinese ballads. Different from the classical Chinese ballads, the modern features distinguishes modern Chinese ballads from the western ones. Since 1920s, the new perspective had been strengthening and extending the excellent features of modern ballads for 30 years.As far as the modern value-orientation of modern Chinese ballads is concerned, this thesis elaborates it as three topics: the emancipation of women, the exploration of the intellectuals' outlook, and the historic tendency of initiators of the new world (most of them are farmers). Since they are still the extensive attributes modern features to the modern Chinese ballads in relation to the value-orientation.To explore the modern conveying strategy of modern Chinese ballads, the thesis points out that plot strategy is not compatible with the development of modern Chinese ballads, and further to deprive their modern features. It explicitly states that the real modem conveying strategies are the emotional strategy and the symbolist strategy. The illustration of their advantages highlights the modernity of the symbolist strategy, which is seen as the most advanced conveying strategy.Whatever the value-orientation or conveying strategy is concerned, the thesis illustrates both of them with the concrete ballads. The strict and realistic approach is likely to polish the fame of modern Chinese ballads.
