We usually ignore the material basic when we discuss the evolution of Ci . My paper aims to analyze the relationship between the application of print and the evolution of Ci.As we all known, the combat of literary part and musical part of Ci is the imputus for its evolution and the combat is the internal cause. On the other hand, the print technology which came into popular during Song Dynasty is an important stimulate for the evolution of Ci and it is the external cause.From Tang Dynasty to Northsong Dynasty, Ci was spread by the singers not the text medium. As a result, the literary part of Ci was dominated by the musical part.In Southsong Dynasty, the Printing press of private grew up and its publishing activities were more directed by the market than the government. Therefore, the print matter of Ci emerged in a great amount and the text medium took the place of singer as the main medium for the spreading of Ci.The change of medium had deep influence on the writer and the audience of Ci. One of the results was that Ci began to develop without the binding of music.
