Mencius is a book that belongs to representative ancient books and records in Pre-Qin Dynasty. Also it is one of representative masterpieces of the confucianists. The book adopts recorded utterance style, and has more oral character, which reflects language features in middle and later period of Pre-Qin Dynasty. It has important value of language material.This thesis' object of study is subject-predicate sentence in Mencius. It analyses and describes subject-predicate sentence completely through grammer and semantics and then discovers that this sentence is compounded by the first, second, third sentence pattern three-level system. There are eight sentence patterns in the second level, which are verb-predicate sentence, noun-predicate sentence, abjective-predicate sentence,subject-predicate predicate sentence, numberal predicate sentence , auxiliary verb-predicate sentence,adverb-predicate sentence and pronoun-predicate sentence. The core sentence pattern is verb-predicate sentence. The third sentence pattern has verb sentence, verb-object sentence, verb-complement sentence, conjunction-verb sentence , jianyu sentence. On the basis ofanalysing and describing the above 13 sentences, the thesis compares verb-predicate sentence patterns in Mencius with the same sentence patterns in the masterpieces, Zuozhuan and Shiji ,which are before or after Mencius. we hope that it can display the features of verb-predicate sentence patterns of Mencius.
