A Comparative Study On Classifiers In Chinese And Japanese

Compared with various Indian and European languages, the use of classifiers (also called assistant numerals in Japanese) is one of the characteristics of Chinese and Japanese. Classifier, stems from nouns, verbs and certain adjectives. When used properly, classifiers make the accuracy, sharpness and vividness of language, and vice versa. Japanese classifiers have been affected by Chinese to such an extent that Japanese almost takes all classifiers from Chinese. Classifiers show some features both in common and in difference, or similarity and dissimilarity. The article aims to discuss the characteristics and usage of Japanese classifiers by proper examples. Also, the article probes into the characteristics of Chinese and Japanese through comparative analysis on classifiers. Of all the four chapters, chapter 1 briefs the. significance of classifiers in a language, the work pioneered by others and the purpose, importance and content of the thesis. Chapter 2 discusses the historical origin of classifiers in both Chinese and Japanese, and the links between them. Chapter 3 discusses the usages of classifiers and analyses the differences of classifiers in Chinese and Japanese Chapter 4 discusses the rhetorical function and unconventional use of classifiers: 1) to make the expression more accurate and concrete by changing empty words into notional words; 2) to fortify appeal by leaving room for imagination; 3) to stress characteristics by stimulating association; 4) to improve the rhythm of sentences by adjusting syllables; 5) to express feelings and color of language..
