A Persistent Womanist Explorer

The Color Purple is an excellent novel reflecting the thought and life of modem Afro-American women, which probes into the problem about Afro-American women, with a new visual angle, original conception and special writing skill. In this novel, black woman writer Alice Walker shapes a new womanist image-Celie, which arouses great interests of many critics.This thesis gives a coherent and systematic analysis of the woman image from mental, spiritual belief and actual independence by linking with the inter-relationship among black people, such as relationship between different sexes, family relationship and black self-hood at different levels of historical, social and cultural background. The purpose is to explore black woman's potentiality and social value, arouse black women to seek powerful support in them so as to actualize freedom, equality and liberation in the American society full of problems of discrimination.
