From 1929 to 1931, the New Moon School led by Hu shih and Luo Longki launched a campaign contending for human rights from the Kuomintang. During the campaign, they published many essays in the magazine, the New Moon, sharply attacking the kuomintang's dictatorship and raising an objection to the theory and practice of the Communist Party, meanwhile, they systematically expressed their thought of human rights, and democratic politics, which had a wide influence on the society of the time. The paper aims to help people to understand the political characteristics of liberalism in China around the year of 1930 by probing into the New Moon's political thought. Based on the analysis of the modern meanings of the New Moon School's political thought, the author intends to offer some useful ideological revelations for the social innovations of today. The paper consists of three parts.Part One, "the origin of the thought". In this part, the author mainly deals with the origin of the name called "the New Moon School" and the rising of the human rights campaign. Besides, by making a statistical form and preliminary analysis of all the political essays published by the New Moon School, the author lays a foundation for the further illustration of the New Moon School's political liberalism. In the second part, the author elaborates the New Moon school's political liberalism. Making a deep analysis of the New Moon School's political essays, the author classified their thought as thought of human rights, attacking the kuomintang's reactionary rule, questioning the thoughtof the Communist Party and democratic political thought. The key point of the illustration in this part is the New Moon School's thought of human rights and attacking the reactionary rule of the kuomintang's government. In the illustration of "human right thought", the paper classifies the thought as views of human rights, views of ruling by law and views of liberalism, according to the original meaning in Hu shih's Preface to Essays on Human Rights. By evaluating the specific content and analyzing the modern meanings of the thought, the paper helps to make us realize the gain and loss of the thought and provides useful references for today, as well. In the illustration of "attacking the kuomintang's reactionary rule", the author expounds and proves that the basic political tendency of the New Moon School is to combat the kuomintang's dictatorship, and the author praises their courage in face of power politics to some degree. In the illustration of "questioning the Communist Party's theory and practice", the author points out that the New Moon School's criticism is not a malicious attack on the Communist Party but based on the completely academic discussion. In the illustration of "democratic political thought", the author analyses the concrete content of the New Moon School's political thought and probes into the modern meanings contained in the thought for the references of today.Part Three, "evaluations of the thought". The author reviews the great influence of the New Moon School's political liberalism, analyses the reason for its failure, finally, evaluates the historical and practical meaning of the thought.
