The Research Of Chinese Characters: The Effect Of Visual Angle

Although there have been abundant researches on Chinese characters, but some of the reports are conflict, such as the findings about the existence of stroke effect. The effect of visual angle upon Chinese characters recognition had been mentioned by some researchers years ago. However there is not any systematic research on it., in this research, we put the visual angle as independent variable and use the eye movement technology, in order to study the effect of visual angle on Chinese characters recognition. Also, we discuss the question of optimum visual angle, the style of character process, etc.We adopted the single factor and multi level design in this research. Visual angle is independent variable .which is divided into 7 levels from 2 to 19 degree. 12 undergraduates who major in art participated in this experiment. We use the computer to do this research, made the character been seen on the screen, with the fixation distance from people to screen, we got changeable and fixation visual angle by changing the size of characters. We got the following results under the experimental condition(limit to high frequency and left-right structure Chinese characters):(1) There is no difference between reaction time (6) The curve between visual angle and fixation in different visual angles except 10 and 19 number is beeline, also and saccade number, degree.(2) The curve between visual angel and (7) There is no relation between visual angle reaction time is parabola, with up direction. and blink number.(3) There is difference between fixation time in (8) Left eye do more effect than right in job of different visual angles, no difference between identifying the character.different eyes.(4) The curve between visual angle and fixation (9) Under 10-11 degree, people have shortest time is parabola, with up direction. reaction time and fixation time, so it is theoptimum visual angle.(5) There is difference among visual angle, (10) This research proved that the components fixation number, and saccade number, not and or analogy structure of characters is the basic blink number.unit in identifying.
