May 4th period saw the consciousness of Chinese children's Literature ,and as its theoretic founder and architect, Zhou Zuoren achieved the greatest accomplishment in that age. His conception of children and children's literature, the former based on his "view of cultivating people "and the latter on his attitude to children ,and in particular, the revelation of the connotation of the "children's quality" and "literary quality", were both full of ideological content and of great academic value .To a certain degree, modern Chinese theories of children's literature originated from him and also ripened in him. In the past one or two decades, people have made increasingly deep study of his theories. The complexity of his theories themselves makes it inherently possible that the study will make steady headway. This dissertation is trying to rediscover the connotation and the theoretical basis of his conception of children' s literature on a wide base of rereading and intensive reading of his words concerned.This dissertation includes five parts: Introduction, Charterl, Charter2, Charter3 and Additional Discourse.Introduction: It briefly introduces Zhouzuoren's important position in the history of Theories on Children's Literature. And by employing the theories of (children) psychology and pedagogy and with an attempt to demonstrate each other between the conceptions of adults' literature and children' s literature, on a base of rereading and intensive reading, a further discussion is made on the connotation of his view on children's literature. An explanation that his View of Cultivating People can be possible and important both as a thought basis and as an angle of view to research the essence of his theories is also pointed. The criterions of appraisal on his theories are also included in this part.Charter 1: This part mainly studies the connotation of Zhou's views on children by inquiring the relationship between his ideas of "Cultivating People " and the discovery ofchildren. First, it's clearly demonstrated that child became one dimension of his idea of "Educating People". Through Cultivating People in the late Qing Dynasty to Cultivating Nation in May 4th Movement, child was primarily found as the "human being" .Zhou regarded the child not only as human being but also as child, which made the real discovery of child. As the special individual existence, child became one dimension of Cultivating People. Second, taking his View of Cultivating People which means What Child Should Be as a standpoint, and with his knowledge in biology, anthropology and paeduetics as his theoretic basis, Zhou's View on Children, namely, What Child Is, is expounded. He stated that children are complete individuals who are entirely different from adults. Children, as the persons of mankind, should be taken as the center.Charter2: Connotation of Zhou's" children's quality" is displayed through four aspects. First, stage theories: according to the stages of research on children and children' s psychological characteristics, Zhou Zuoren divided the children's literature into stages and brought up different requests, which facilitates "children center" to be implemented. Second, children's rights to fancy: In the light of myth theory of anthropology school and research on children, he confirmed the literary quality of fairy tale and its fitness and necessity to children's fancy psychology, which is then demonstrated by the "sensitiveness period "theory in modern psychology. Third, opposition to advocating education of patriotism : criticize the invasion of "national humiliation education" and "advocating national goods " to the children' s literature.He argumented that according to children' s requests,we shoud bringing up them into "complete individuals" and "proper persons" ,but not "loyal and obedient citizens" ,which is then testified to be scientific by the contemporary pedagogy and psychology.Opposing "idolatry" and "hero worship" was his theoretical basis.Fourth, "the world of third" :created in the lite...
