On Post-modernity Of Robbe-Grillet's Novels

A.Robbe-Grillet, a representative of "New novels", has been devoting to brand new ideas and skills instead of those dated theories to express indeterminate and afloat reality. However, for its short history in China, few critics can make conclusive theoretical evolution to it except several initial articles published in some specialized magazines or periodicals. What is this thesis shown is to find out similarities that hidden in Grillet's all novels by reading and post-modernism theories. It will analyze his novels form three different aspects:1. Indeterminacy. It is basic character of Post-modernism literature. So are in his novels. It comes from the feelings of reality. One of the Grillet's creations is to express the indeterminacy with indeterminate structures and narratives. We can easily find indeterminacy in characters, plots and themes.(l)Indeterminacy on characters. Cut off relations between rolesand reality, characters become afloat and unknowable. (2)Indeterminacy on plots. The continuity of time and cause-effect relations are destroyed, plots lost their clearness and certainty. (3)Indeterminacy on themes. There is no united themes canbe found in Grellit's novels any more. 2. Complanation. Post-modernism destroyed meaning depth mode, which embodied in pursuit of complanation and diminishment of history consciousness.(l)The narrator describes the surface layer of the thingsand persons with dispassionate, objective and limited angle of view. Meanwhile, the resource of meaning come from reality is cut off.(2)Breaking the continuous and integrity of time. Destroyedhistory consciousness by instant, people enjoy their livesat contemporantity time. Time turns into space in novels.3. Fragmentariness. Main body has lost his center position andbecomes fragmentary ego.(l)The disappearance of the person's center position. People are not the king of the world any longer. The position has declined down the level of the world. (2)Diminishment of complete and united ego concept. Thecomplete and united ego is replaced by fragmentary ego. Conclusions: Based on analyzing above, Post-modernism characters can be easily found in Grellit's novels. Meanwhile, the close relation between post-modernism and realism should be paid enough attention to. Post-modernism is based on realism and realism is condition of post-modernism. Although his novels have brought large affection in the world, Grellit's creations in novels are not all successful. The achievement and flaw are obvious in his creations. We should treat them subjectively. The purpose of the thesis is to cast a brick to attract jade.
