I hereby present my deepest gratitude to many people whose intellectual help as well as personal care have made this thesis possible. First and foremost, I feel enormously indebted to the supervisor of this thesis, Professor Li Shaoshan, who has helped me accomplish the most important academic work so far in my life. Despite hectic schedules, he always showed great patience in listening to my sketchy ideas and then gave many substantial and invaluable comments. I never felt lost after each meeting with him. I also feel extremely honored and privileged to have been benefiting from his instructions and edifications ever since my undergraduate years.I am also obliged to Professor Pan Yongliang, Professor Yan Chensong, Professor Xue Hanrong, Professor Cheng Gong, Professor Li Jingwei, Assistant Professor Pu Jianzhong, Instructor Zhao Weibin and Instructor Cai Jinting, whose dedicated teaching and enlightening lectures have benefited me immensely in my two and a half year postgraduate studies. Professor Pan, Professor Cheng and Assistant Professor Pu have shown sustained concern for my thesis and given me invaluable encouragement and advice. My warm thanks are also due to Major Dong Bin and Major Chen Baofu and the military cadets of Company Four in the English Department of the PLA University of Foreign Languages, whose ready participation and sincere cooperation in this study have been of vital importance. I am thankful, too, to Xiao Xuyue, Xiong Jianguo, Cai Hong, Chen Wanxia, Ma Yuli, Lu Yanruo and other classmates for the unforgettable discussions and seminars we had together during the past years. In the end, I would like to express my heart-felt gratitude to my beloved parents and little sister for their unselfish love and care and unremitting encouragement and support that always drive me forward.I should note that though I use we, our or us many times in this thesis, I myself am responsible for all possible mistakes, errors or inadequacies of any kind.
