The main frame of American literature has greatly changed since the minority ethnic writers shifted from marginalized to one of the mainstream groups of writers. Among the prominent works with the theme of dual sexual discrimination imposed on Chinese American women, Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior has been one of the bestWith the aid of theories as postmodernism and cultural studies, this dissertation will try to elaborate the dilemma of dualities from postmodernist and cultural studies perspectives: burden of dual authenticities like historic authenticity and experiential authenticity; burden of being a professional artistic writer or a cultural inheritor; controversies of its genre and its writing techniques; burden of dual identities as being a female with a Chinese cultural background in such a male-dominated American society.Upon the existent critics about this book and Kingston herself, with new approaches of postmodernism and cultural studies within the cultural pluralism environment, this dissertation is trying to call more attention to the literary studies and cultural identity studies as a new independent subject of research or teaching in a multi-disciplinary contextReferences for the writing of this dissertation were mainly derived from library research, internet and computer software.
