Learning piano playing is a complex activity that combines both mental skills and action skills. Early theory and practice in piano instructions took arts and skills as the core and cared little about learners' psychological factors. With the developing of sciences of psychology, the roles and influences of individual's psychological factors in piano exercising are increasingly valued, which have been studied and experimented by many scholars both at home and abroad.Piano exercising is of vital importance in developing skills and in playing a piece of music. A high degree performance of piano playing depends on exercising. Theories of piano courses usually focused on playing skills and musical representation, and little attention has ever been paid to the mental activities, which, in fact, plays a very important role in piano learning. Attention, memory, imagination and auditory sensation are considered as the important psychological factors in the process of piano exercising.Based on the basic principles of cognitive psychology, the research adopts qualitative and quantitative methods and studies the subjects of those students who are piano majors in non-musical academy. Investigations of their mental activities of attention, memory, imagination, and auditory sensation in the process of practice show that:1. The ability of monitoring attention, memory, imagination, auditory sensation has great effect on piano practicing.2. Subjects have a high level on the stability, distribution and span of attention, while low in transformation.3. The ability of musical memory is moderate, and action memory is mainly used, image memory is neglected to a degree.4. Most subjects tend to imagine some sort of emotion or atmosphere during practicing. The majority of students think that mental practice is important and negative mood is the problem to deal with.5. Subjects have a good habit of auditory sensation and impression, but have a weak ability of internal auditory sensation.6. Students have developed a good habit in practicing and can use suitable strategy.7. The time of starting is correlative with attention stability and memorizing and has little correlation with the bad habit of attention and auditory sensation.
