As the mature form of Chinese Buddhism, the Chan Sect not only inherited thoughts of India Buddhism, but also integrated tightly with Chinese cultures to form new thoughts of its own and therefore enriched cultures of the whole world. In the thoughts of the Chan sect, the hsin hsing doctrine acts as a basic theory and so plays an important role. It reflects typically the character of Chinese Buddhism. To understand the essence of the Chan Sect's thoughts, we must learn about its hsin hsing theories. However, the Chan sect's hsin hsing doctrine followed a developing course. To study the course is of most importance in grasping the line of the whole thoughts of Chan sect and in making clear its position in Chinese philosophy. This thesis is to study the course systematically, and find the course in general is from Hui Neng's "reality heart" of "no mind" to Hong Zhou Sect's (including its descendants' especially Xi Yun's) "nature heart" of "no mind". The Bull-head sect's thought of "no mind" , which had absorbed 《Zhuangzi》 thoughts, played an important role in the course of the transation. The writer will be very happy if the readers might find a few valuable points from the thesis about the issues as follows:What are the hsin hsing doctrines like in the thoughts of Hui Nengs 《Zhuangzi》 the Bull-head SecU the Hong Zhou Sect and its descendants? What are the relationships between them? As a developing course, what on earth are the position and value of the hsin hsing doctrines of the Chan Sects in the Chinese culture ?...
