The tragic spirit was the core of Byron's characters. It was made up of doubt and disappointment, criticism and negation, revolt and conquest. The main methods were rebellious social action and ironic literary creation. It led to Byron's leaving his native land. It was the highest expression that Byron gave up his literary undertaking and devoted himself to the foreign national liberation movement. The social circumstances including politics, morality, religion were the essential reasons in bringing about Byron's tragic spirit. The tragic spirit was a decisive factor in a great degree how Byron chose his subject matters. At the same reason Byron's creation presented a changeable emotional course, and in which the moving and tragic emotions were the main. The tragic spirit was also effected Byron's choosing and portraying characters. It had caused a reaction of thinks in England when the English were still in the state of conservatism then. It also encouraged the Greek struggle for national independence. It was a great comfort to Russian cultural aristocracies. In modern China, pioneers of culture and think undertook the task of national rejuvenation, they regarded Byron's tragic spirit as a example and propagated it enthusiastically. Of course, people's different comprehension about Byron's tragic spirit led to different effect.
