Linshu, the pioneer of Chinese translation literature in the early 20th century, translated foreign literature into classical Chinese writing without mastering foreign languages, but his works have gotten wide reception, which invokes cultural probe. The dissertation first summarizes Linshu's translation theory, such as the social function of translation, translation strategy, the qualifications of translator, the relation between translators, original works and writers. Linshu employs classical Chinese writing as translation vehicle while it has some defects accompanied with its long history. His translation works' popularity shows they can have independent value deriving from the aesthetic value of classic Chinese writing and translator's creativity, which illustrates elaborately in close reading of Lin's translation 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. There are many heterorganic factors in Linshu's writing in terms of fictional reality, narrative point, narrative time and writing methods. In contact with western literature,he innovated his novel theory of the role of novel and novel stuff, and injected such views as humor and legitimacy of fiction into his criticism on ancient Chinese prose.
