Gaudy Art

The author of this thesis carried out a. research into gaudy art, which is a very popular new art current in Chinese contemporary art after the middle of 1990s. In this thesis, the author tried to explore the origin and development condition of this particular art phenomenon and made researches into the social, economic, cultural factors of gaudy art and its characteristics, which may influence its formation. These researches will fill in the gaps of researching into gaudy art in the history of arts.The name of gaudy art, originally can be seen in the criticisms to two art exhibition, (which were held in Peking, April, 1996,)-Life in Gaudy Dresses & Model For the Masses from art critic Li Xianting. After that,experienced a period of time's ferment, in May, 1999, many artists held two art exhibition named Auh, La, La, Kitsch & Styrene in Peking Zhongshan Park and TianjinTeda Art Museum. At this time, this art was formally named gaudy art and displayed the strength of this kind of art. From then on, gaudy art becomes the concern of the society and then becomes an art form having distinct artistic characteristics.Gaudy art caused a lot of disputes in society. People who praise it called it "a very dazzling art phenomenon", while the opposite condemns it to manufacturing in rough and slipshod, complaining without cause, and wearing the fashion jacket of culture, "a result of business and superficial culture." But regardless and how, "whether you like it or not, it is capturing everything and extending quickly." Gaudy art inevitably has become the indispensable part of Chinese contemporary art history; it plays a very important role in constructing complete contemporary art system.
