Maxine Hong Kinston, one of the famed Chinese American woman writers, published her first novel The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts in 1976, which was regarded as the first important work in the history of Chinese American literature. From a viewpoint of culture, the dissertation will try to elaborate the significance of Chinese culture and clear-cut feminist affirmation of Kinston in The Woman Warrior from three feminist perspectives: establishment of female subjectivity, subversion of positions between men and women and seeking feminine discourse and writing power. Therefore the paper draws the conclusion that by a writing strategy of cultural misreading, the word warrior, Kinston fights with all sexists and racists with her pen, the surrogate sword. The book, Kinston's political manifesto, incisively shows her feminist thoughts and values to subvert the discipline of phallocentric order.
