Reviewing and explaining Zhang Ailing' s and New Feeling School' s creation of nevols in the light of the death, the thesis tries to explore the expression of the death and the modernism in their works, and to discuss mordem evolution of death consciousness of modern Chinese, which will provide not only fresh ideas on the study of Zhang Ailing and New Feelings, but aslo a helpful reference to define them in literary history objectively and justly. The death consciousness is closely connected with the time consciousness. The thesis discusses the time consciousness in Zhang Ailing' s and New Feeling' s works at the first, then finds that the psychological factor of anxieties to the time is the unrestrained horror of the subject to the death. In Zhang Ailing' s nevols, the psychological time manipulates the realtime, the past against the present and there' is clearness in the past. While in New Feeling' s nevols, the time is dispered, static and imaginary, showing emotional rebel and struggle under the press of the death. We must pay enough attention to the metropolis where Zhang Ailing and New Feeling' s live and write. It is their ambiguous attitude towards life-and-death field influenced by colonial culture, unfamiliar and familiar; alien and intimate , which forms the special aesthetic intention They, expressing modern metropolitan sentiments as its children, shadow its existance with the death..While experiencing the horror of the death and the sorrow of the life, they try to deny, resist and even surpass the death by their creations. There are lots of descriptions of relationship between death and sex. The sex is a shift from the horror of the death. At the same time, they experience heavy personal psychological crises in the war cultural atmosphere. Liberating themselves from the great narration of May 4 literature, they reinuestigate the meaning and value of daily life which can dispel their death anxieties and hide their death consciousness.By choosing the image and emphasizing the structure, they show modernist sentiments, different from the traditional culture. Covered by the tradition, Zhang Ailing' s creation has modernist core. Her dosolate meaning and aesthetic spale of imagery display modernist courage to create. While containing an inherent tention in active language, New Feelings' creation rebels traditional artistic feelings, giving readers aesthetic experience only the imitation of foreign culture, seems shallow and imcomplate outlook onlife and aesthetic spirits. Comparatively, Zhang Ailing' s exposure to the nightmare of the times and investigation on the value of life and death are profounder. As the middle object in history, Zhang Ailing' s and New Feelings' understanding and thinking on the death are influenced by Chinese traditional death notion and western death philosophy including existentialism. Their understandings surmount the Confucian death, it loving the life and hating the death. But limited by their experiences and thoughts, they can not make it philosophy. Conparatively speaking, New Feelings' is shallow and perceptual while Zhang Ailing' s is more rational and conscious. In fact because of their ambiguous attitude towards the death, they are involved in a strang circle of the epistemology. On the one hand, they are afraid of the death , avoiding, hidding and burying the death ;0n the other hand, they want to surpass the death, despising the death by self-indulgent and ridiculous existence. So that there are many conflicts caused by the death which is the special charm of their works.
