The thesis mainly discusses the equivalence in translating ancient Chinese poetry. As we know, a poem is a combination of sound, form, and meaning. The ideal goal of translating a poem is to preserve all those elements in TT. But as to ancient Chinese poetry, the disadvantage of the unique characteristics of Chinese featured by monosyllabic and richness in hieroglyphic characters may block the translators?efforts in conveying the first two elements equivalently. Thus the thesis mainly discusses the quivalence?from the angle of the third element, pointing out the great significance of critical exegesis for realizing the equivalence in ancient Chinese poetry translation.Exegesis has been traditionally designed for the critical interpretation of ancient texts with reference to exegetic classics. What matters here is none other than a lucidly detailed interpretation of the verbal significance, without which the translator would suffer the disadvantage of misunderstanding and misinterpretation, and thus the inadequacy of target text. Therefore, the thesis has chosen to examine the exegetic influences on the textual equivalence of the target text to the source text in ancient Chinese poetry translation by investigating to what extent have the original beauties (including the effective uses of words, the rhetorical devices, the stylistic effects and the poetic moods) that have permeated most of the ancient Chinese poems been functionally conveyed to the English texts. By a train of case studies, the thesis tries to produce a strong confirmation for an insightful study of the source text by the agency of exegesis with a view to achieving the supposed equivalence of the target text with the greatest degree of possibility.
