Pragmatic Mechanism In Translation

The present thesis is written for the purpose ofintroducing pragmatic mechanism into translating process.Facing with numerous problematic issues in translation, itturns out to be incompetent more and more up to now tostudy from mere a linguistic perspective. An effort ishereby made, to view the translating process semiotically,in the result of which recognition of the magnitudinal statusof pragmatic mechanism is affirmed.As is put by Geoffrey Leech, pragmatics can beusefully defined as the study of how utterances havemeanings in situations. Then situation is of greatsignificance affecting the meaning of an utterance. If it'stext, a written form, the context is counted. Pragmaticinterpretation is relatively context-variable and unclear. It'sdifficult to pin down what the force of an utterance is,given that pragmatic force is essentially non-categoricaland indefinitely variable according to context, and that4pragmatic description involves indeterminacies andcontinuous values. That makes a pragmatic analysis inrepresentation important.In view of the vast differences in both culture andlanguage, some persons have concluded that ultimatelytranslatability is impossible (Mounin, 1976). In this paper, asemiotic explanation is offered around translatability issue.Though temporal absolute identity of meaning can never beachieved whether in intra-lingual or inter-lingual translation,effective equivalence of meaning can be communicatedboth within a language as well as between languages. Myposition is that meaningful translation should be based onpragmatic analysis of the source language, of which bothcontext and cultural factors should be taken intoconsideration.
