On Cai Yong

Cai Yong , living in the later East Han Dynasty, was a typical character in the age of the transition from the old to the new. He was the combination of the contradiction, puzzle, fashion and spirit of his age. This thesis is to involve myself in the age, and to touch, comprehend and explain Cai Yong who has communicated with me by my "tender feeling and respect", instead of drawing a simple conclusion on Cai Yong's right and wrong, merit and error.This thesis includes preface, ending, and the main body of three chapters.The preface is to study Cai Yong and the background of his age generally, and to reveal the matter that Cai Yong was the model of original Chinese literati and the typical character in the age of the transition from the old to the new.The first chapter is to research Cai Yong's academic contribution and influence on the later time (especially the period between Wei and Jin Dynasties) with three aspects on Cai Yong's academic achievements: the dissemination of Lun Heng, the mood of writing history, and the achievement and characteristic of literature.The second chapter is to excavate Cai Yong's thought, emotion, puzzle and contradiction of action, and his tragedy during the age with huge changes in the society's every field. The content contains Cai Yong's dilemma between being an official and a hermit, the conflict between the revelation of his true feeling and the reality of the society, his sticking to the life and the unavoidable tragic end.The third chapter is to study charisma's formation and development during the age of later Han and early Wei Dynasties. The content contains the awakening of individual and the discovery of charisma, the typical meaning of Cai Yong's charisma with versatile talent during the formation of literati's demeanor, the relationship between Cai Yong' charisma and "the awareness of literature" in Wei Dynasty.The ending is my thinking and sigh with emotion when I am facing with Cai Yong.
