Literary stylistics, a discipline which applies modem linguistic theory and methodology to the study of literary style, seeks to discover how the authors enhance the thematic meaning and aesthetic effectiveness of their literary writings by making characteristic choices in a given language. Based on this, the paper attempts to explore the possibility and inevitability in applying the theory and methodology of fiction stylistics to literary criticism of novels, and to provide a feasible procedure and an effective format for novel analysis. The whole paper is composed of four chapters: Chapter One: A Brief Account of General Theories of Stylistics and Literary Criticism: It discusses the possibility and necessity of applying stylistic theories and methodology to literary criticism. Chapter Two: Discussion on the Mode of Stylistic Analysis and Its Theoretic Basis of Linguistics: It recalls three trends of text-oriented criticism and points out that literary stylistics borrows some theory and method from these critic schools and assimilates them into its theoretical foundation. Finally, it cites two modes of stylistic analysis, namely Jakobson抯 functional equivalence pattern and analytical pattern of transitivity adopted by functional stylistics. Chapter Three: A Procedure of Stylistic Analysis on Different r Language Levels: It analyzes in detail the stylistic effects that influence the understanding of the text on lexical, syntactic and contextual layers. Chapter Four: Narrative Point of View and Speech Presentation in Fiction and the Stylistic Effects They Create.
