This thesis intends to analyze the narrative tecboques in A Possage to India.The thesisdoes not endeavour to employ Forster's theory of novel, Which, though, has been quitepopular in the literary circle. Instead, it uses the techniques of fOcalization and free indireCtdiscourse to do the probe.In the introduction, some information about focalization and free indirect discourse ispresented. From this part, the reader gets some idea of focalization, its tyPes as well as theiradvantages and disadvafltages. The reader also gets some general ideas as to free indireCtdiscourse and some of the eXPlanations of its employInent in the thesis.The first part of the thesis deals wtth the use of external focalization in the novel. Aparticular emphasis is placed on Chapter I of the book, in Which the major themes of thenovel are linplied and reinforced by the use of fOcalization.In Part ll, character-bound focalization is dwelt on. Many examples are discussed andassessed to show the characteristics of this technique and its advantages in helping thenovel develop.The third part of the thesis tries to bring out the effectiveness of free indirect discourse.By this device, the novel aPpears to be concise and incisive.The last part is conclusion, summarizing the main points of the thesis and pointing oulthat, analyZed by the modem narrative techniques, A Passage lo India is Still a masterpiece.
