Beauty Comes From Neutrality

"Neutrality" is one of the core categories of china's classical aesthetics, showing the dialectical harmony and dynamic harmony of the unity of opposites of the things. "Neutrality" is not the identity of the non-contradiction and undifferentiatedness of things. Among those contradictions that make up "neutrality" , there is a dynamic proper point When all the contradictions meet on this point it is neutrality , or it is not . We call the point "rightness~~ . "Rightness" is just the crux of the matters , so that "neutrality derives from rightness. Different people have different views of "rightness" , for the different judgements can result in different connotations of" rightness ", which then result in different kinds of "neutrality". The confucianists prefer a mean course by holding the two and using the middle and seek the "mean neutrality" the Daoists like naturalness and nothingness and pursue the "natural neutrality" or "great neutrality " :the Zen regard the emptiness of mind as rightness , and return to the "mind neutrality" . According to China's classical aesthetics, beaut~' originates form neutrality, or "no neutrality, no beauty " , and that neutrality is the prerequisite of beauty. The quality of neutrality determines the one of the beauty, so in the history of China's classical aesthetics there are three main aesthetic standards: beauty of common neutrality, beauty of mean neutrality and beauty of great neutrality. The principle of aesthetics that "beauty is considered to derive from neutrality " first believes that "neutrality is beauty" ;in other words, the harmony between the perceiver and the world is beauty ;the principle also holds that the harmony of things is the prerequisite of achieving beauty ,which means no neutrality, no beauty" . So the China's classical aesthetics sticks to the maxim of "neutrality but difference" making things reach the state of neutrality to result in beauty. That"beauty comes from neutrality" derminfs both the sameness andthe difference of beauties; the harmony between the object and the aesthetic standards determines whether the object can arouse aesthetic feeling in people, while the aesthetic judgement of people has both sameness and difference. Beauty is not permanent but changeable. That whether there is "neutrality" between the receiver and the world can result in the dynamic transformation between "beauty" and its opposite . All and all, neutrality is the basis of beauty, and rightness is the one of neutrality. In other words, beauty originates from neutrality which originates from rightness. The principle of aesthetics that beauty derives from neutrality is a universal one in the classical aesthetics both in China and other countries in the world. It is a truth at present and in the future as well.
