A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Adverb "dou(都)" From The Aspects Of Syntax,Semantics And Pragmatics

In this paper, we analysis and divide the senses of the adverb "dOu(#ll),,different from the previous studies. We think that there are only two senses of"dOu(#0)", one being used as a scope adverb meaning "to sum uP the general characterof the unit of people or things"; the other being used as a modal adverb indicating thatthe speaker is emphasizing the unusualness of certain condition, and the ordinarily-thought sense of time adverb "dOu(#ll)" should be included in this sense. Here, byvarious analytic methods, we try to provide a comprehensive analysis of the twosenses from the aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Furthermore, we manageto find out the hidden relation between the two senses. That is, the former sense is thebasic and the latter sense is derived flom it.
