Today, Chinese college general music teaching pays more attention toquantitative and unitary assessment than to the qualitative and comprehensiveassessment, which is not consistent with the development or aesthetic evaluation ofthe perceptual, aesthetic and general education. As a result, it can't completely fulfillthe course goals. Qualitative assessment emphasizes the procedure and personality sothat it is more applicable in college music teaching which is characterized asemotional and aesthetic. Based on this context, portfolio assessment implementationin college general art teaching, especially in music teaching, is the most practicableand effective way of qualitative assessment and takes full advantage of qualitativeassessment. The research of portfolio assessment implementation in college generalmusic teaching is a significant experiment in the reform of college general musiceducation.Teaching assessment has developed to the present through four stages, with thelatest one called Qualitative Assessment Stage. As a representative of the qualitativeassessment, portfolio assessment is based on the theories of constructivism andmulti-intelligence. It explicitly shows the comprehensiveness of the subject and thecontent of the assessment and the interaction between teaching and learning, in orderto promote the development of students. Portfolio assessment is based on the woks bythe students and reflects the dynamic process. By reflecting the process portfolio andthe development portfolio, music learning of the students is evaluated.College music teaching falls into four stages--organization and planning, collection and selection, assessment, and communication and reflection. This researchdiscusses the practicability of using the portfolio assessment in college general musicteaching. It also constructs principles, methods, dimension and content of theassessment on theory. On this basis, we give a operating procedure as reference ofspecific implementation. The problems left and possible further research direction ofthe studyshows at the end of the paper.
