Metrical Study On The Adverbs Of Degree In The Dream Of Red Mansions

As is represented of classical vernacular Chinese novel, The Dream of Red Mansions reflected the basic face of Beijing dialect in 18th century.It is a very important corpora in stady of the transitional development of contemporary Chinese from modern Chinese. There has been a long history to study of adverbs of degree, due to its high frequency using in daily life and great difficulty in distinguishing, the study is of significance no matter in research on vocabulary or in research on grammar, that is to say it comes to a crucial subject in linguistics, especially in the field of function words. Adverbs of degree in The Dream of Red Mansions are of striking characteristics, and it shows us the evolvements of Chinese adverbs of degree from Modern Chinese to Contemporary Chinese.Therefore the topic of Adverbs of Degree in The Dream of Red Mansions is worthy to research.This article has chosen Jia Xu version paper book for analysis, additional with two electronic editions to review.At the same time, the article used Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU for deep researches.Then constructed the corpus which is called"The Dream of Red Mansions of Degree Adverbs corpus".This corpus totally found out 104 different adverb of degree, which 90 come from original 80 chapters and 73 come from additional 40 chapters.The total number appears frequency of adverbs of degree is 3220.The article have referred Chinese Dictionary and Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (5th edition),and have used"The Dream of Red Mansions of Degree Adverbs corpus"to study.Compared with the adverbs of degree in original 80 chapters and additional 40 chapters in The Dream of Red Mansions by metrical study.Because different adverbs of degree represents different degrees, according to classification criteria we could separate the adverbs of degree into two major types and eight small classes.The article also researched this different groups through measuring method.In addition the article focused the research on six highest frequency adverbs of degree:"Geng","Da","Hen","Yuefa","Tai","Lve".The disyllable adverbs of degree and polysyllable adverbs of degree which contained the five words also been analysed.This thesis used methods of metrical statistics and comparative analysis,from the angles of quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis,synchronic study with diachronic study, microcosmic study with macroscopical study,explored the characteristics of dverbs of degree in The Dream of Red Mansions.
