Based on Levefere's rewriting theory and Pound's creative translation theory, this thesis tries to interpret Pound's creative translation of Lun Yu in terms of his ideology and poetics. Firstly, Pound's translation is known as poetic translation, since he used to apply his modern poetics to his translation practice. His three principles of imagism are generally put into his translations, and his The Analects is typical of a product representing his poetics of image, expression and musicality. By creating image, economical expression and musicality, The Analects renders more aesthetic value than philological value. Then, his creative translation of Lun Yu is manipulated by his ideology. Pound's translation of Lun Yu was completed in 1950 after World Warâ…¡and Great Depression had happened. Depressed with disorder of the post-war West, Pound found in Confucianism"a blueprint for a world order in the future"which is what the West in"immediate need"of. On the other hand, Pound was to reconstruct himself by translating Lun Yu, for he was confronted with mental crisis caused by political persecution of American government.Starting from rewriting theory, this thesis interprets Pound's creative translation of Lun Yu by associating it with his poetics and ideology. It then finds out that his creative translation to Lun Yu is achieved in two aspects: creative poetic translation and creative ideological translation. This thesis consists of five Parts. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction. Chapter 2 is devoted to the introduction of Pound's translation theory. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 is the core part of the whole thesis. It tries to give a general summary of this thesis and also points out the significance and further efforts of this current study.
