Gender Differences In Discourse Style From The Perspective Of Intercultural Communication

In recent years, the research on gender differences in communication is attracting more and more scholars'attention. As an important aspect in the field of intercultural communication, gender factors should not be ignored for men and women show gender differences in their communication for many reasons. As a result, misunderstandings come up easily in inter-gender communication,but only when both genders acquire an appropriate understanding of the conversational rules and communicative strategies of both genders can they lessen the possibility of misunderstanding and conflicts in communication to the least. Therefore, the research on gender differences is of great realistic significance to inter-gender communication. Many factors contribute to the gender differences, like social and cultural factors. Base on the classical theories and empirical studies, the author aims to make a systematic study of gender differences in discourse style from the perspective of inter-cultural (gender culture and mainstream culture) communication, compare the gender differences in communication and analyze the factors that formed the differences with the help of a survey.With the gender language and gender culture as the center, the author tries to do a relatively systematic study and analysis of the gender differences in discourse style of language use. This thesis shows that the main cause of this phenomenon is the gender culture subordinate to the traditional and dominated one. Furthermore,the dominant national culture is one of the basic points for the research of inter-cultural communication, the culture difference between east and west represents in the orientations of collectivism and individualism and influenced by high-context or low-context. Thus, the double influences of dominate national culture and gender culture shape the different styles in gender speech communication. At last, the author puts forward a couple of suggestions for effective inter-cultural communication and points out that male and female have to put proper attitude towards the existence of gender language, and apply communicative norm logically and smoothly with the change of the context, and finally improve their inter-gender communicative competence, contribute to people's harmonious relationship and meet their different communicative needs.
