Gricean Theory of Conversational Implicature is considered as a breakthrough in the field of pragmatics. It has attracted attentions from both the philosophic world and the linguistic world since it was first brought to public in 1967. And over the years, thought highly of by many scholars in pragmatics, it was widely used in studies on conversations.Gricean Theory of Conversational Implicature is also fit for analyzing the implicature of news discourses. With the characteristic of communication, news discourses are of some features of conversations. So the writer of a news discourse is inclined to observe the general principle of cooperation in the process of the composition of the discourse, and thus the theory of cooperative principle and conversational implicature is of extraordinary significance in understanding the implied meaning underlying the objective surface of a news discourse. In the thesis, news discourses concerning the heatedly-discussed issue of Google-China conflict will be chosen to be studied. The conflict lasts for a long time and is covered by news organizations in several phases. And only the coverage of the first phase ------ about Google's first declaration of leaving China ------ is analyzed and discussed in this thesis. The superficially objective business news of the conflict between an international company and a government reflects political ideology. The author is devoted to the inquiry into this issue by disclosing the hidden relationship between language and ideology of language users. In order to dig out the implied meaning expressed by discourse writers, six sample news discourses concerning the beginning phase of the Google-China conflict will be studied, on the basis of dynamic context, by utilizing Grice's Theory of Conversational Implicature (CI) as well as his theory of Cooperative Principle (CP). |
