In Late Qing Dynasty, with everlasting import of the western culture,the advocating and learning of western culture's upsurge is so popular while traditional Chinese culture face the risk of inheritance.The preservation group, represented by Zhang Zhidong, rose to populate Chinese culture from the founding of Cungu School. On the support of Qing government, the Cungu School was founded throughout the whole country, but all ended with failure in Early Republic of China. The reason and lessons of the failure deserves rethinking. The research of Cungu School in the presenting academe is so superficial that it is not systemic and thorough enough. Many researchers just put Cungu School as the antithesis of the so-called "new education" historically. Many researchers just analyze the foundation, moto, course, academy, teachers, school system, the expense and the reason of failure. All these research is not systemic and thorough enough that it can not discussed in the point of its inspiration to modern education. From this point of view, this thesis discusses the reason of the foundation, its background, development, failure and its handle process. It points out that its unreasonable positioning, its training objective which is lack of specification and connotation,its teaching content lack of scientific principles and planning principles and its lack of rational measurement standards. On this basis, it further analyses the Cungu School's reason of its decline and disappearance. It points out that its the ideology of running schools is outmoded and backward. Its lack of propaganda to the civil people and its talents cultivated is not urgently need and it was incompletely supported by the government. Meanwhile, it lack of expense and recruiting. In order to explain it further, the thesis takes Hubei as an example, it analyses the founding experience. Finally, the author rethinks the enlightenment of Cungu School for our modern education.It indicates that modern education should treat traditional Chinese learning enthusiasm rationally, and mixes classical Chinese culture in the general knowledge education. And we should connect the quality education with classical Chinese culture and it should realize the humanistic education gist.
