The thesis, starting from Gushiji, a classic from Naxi Nationality, and by the method of classification description and statistic analysis, conducts relatively comprehensive research on the omission phenomenon existed in Dongba language. Mainly, the thesis will contain five parts as follows:â… . Introduction. It reviews some previous research findings as well as introducing the research topic, research methods, research purpose and significance and so on.â…¡. Identification and classification of "omission". The "omission" in this thesis refers to the definition in broad sense:in the Naxi Scripture in Dongba lanaguage, omission means situation in which language is not in line with characters; omissions are classified into three categories, namely, language without characters, characters without language and pictograph.â…¢. Discussion on the most commonly seen phenomenon in Dongba language: language without characters. Reasons for this phenomenon include linguistic reasons (which are similar to ancient Chinese) and philology reasons in particular in early times (which don't exist in ancient Chinese). By categorizing, counting, and analyzing, we find the following main reasons:1.grammatical function; 2. reasons caused by words, namely the nature of particular language text seen in Dongba language; 3. stereotyping of Dongba believer and limitation of writing materials.â…£. Exploration on the phenomenon of characters without language. The reason for this phenomenon includes grammatical reasons, interpretation to the Scripture by Dongba as well as the reading psychology, but the philology reason is the most important. This phenomenon is rarely seen in other languages.â…¤. Analysis on pictograph with emphasis onâ‘ conflict between pronunciation of the words and that of figure symbols;â‘¡some semantic functions caused by the order or the place of figure symbols; and the reasons and development trend of this phenomenon.By the research in this thesis, we may find some new knowledge:1. That in Dongba characters, loan characters appear before the original characters exist.2. Dongba language reflects a historical process. From the comparison between Gushiji and Chongbantu, we may find that Dongba characters focusing on ideograph in the early time, and its phonetic function increased in the later time.3. Combined reasons in grammar, rhetorics and words development, or their respective function lead to the "omission" in Dongba characters. We can find that grammatical reasons are commonly seen in ordinary words (developed words are also included), but the philological reasons can be mainly found in Dongba characters.
