Domestic scholars have different views on Han Yu's status in Chinese intellectual history and literary history. They reached to a general consensus on Han Yu's achievements in prose, but had a controversy on Han Yu's poetry and thought. While standing on an "other" perspective, American Sinologists tried to find the historical position for Han Yu. In the context of the Western academic, they studied Han Yu's literature and thought through various views, and considered Han Yu as a literary reformer and ideological inheritor.By examining American Sinologists' research on Han Yu, this paper mainly reviewes its status through criticizing the studies of Charles Hartman and Stephen Owen. The paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter summarizes the research results of American Sinologists' studies on Han Yu; while the second chapter criticizes Hartman's research on Han Yu. He took the concept of "Antiquity" to contain Han Yu's achievements of his whole life. The third chapter which criticizes Owen's study on Han Yu, is trying to analyze its feature and conclusions. And the fourth chapter summarizes American Sinologists' research on Han Yu and evaluates its features and shortcomings, exploring the innovation of its perspectives and views.Treating Han Yu and The Tang Search for Unity by Charles Hartman as the representative of a comprehensive research angle and The poetry of Meng Chiao and Han Yu by Stephen Owen as the representative of a progressive one, this article summarizes a comprehensive analysis of the U.S. study of Han Yu, and discusses its achievements. By closing reading and comparison, the paper analyses and reviews American Sinologists' studies on Han Yu through an overview of their achievements, hoping that it could build a bridge between the researchers at home and abroad, provide a reference for the domestic studies on Han Yu, and enrich the results of the research on Han Yu.
