Chinese Characteristics is said to be a systematic, deep-going, and unique works about China. Its author is an American missionary whose name is Arthur·Henderson·Smith. It has been so far translated into Chinese, Japanese, French, German and other languages, among which there are more than a dozen of Chinese versions. The domestic study of Chinese Characteristics is mainly on the relationship between Smith with his affection to China, his life in China and his understanding towards Chinese people, or from view of the translation to deconstruct the text; or study on its Nationalism and the Enlightenment influence. I believe that the spread and acceptance process of Chinese Characteristics in China should be studied, that the image of the Chinese people as the other should be studied; so as to reveal the relationship between the post-colonial and Eurocentric perspective of the Western discourse and the image of Chinese people, thus deepen the reflections of the national characteristics. In Chinese Characteristics, it's hard to discover the real Chinese image the authors would like to convey to the reader. the image of Chinese people in Chinese Characteristics described by Smith is a complex and contradictory complex, with much to admire in their quality, while there are also many outsiders do not understand or even shame on its certain moral. It is certainly good quality at kinds of cases that people appreciate much and much, however in some other cases it is outrageous. Therefore the description of the image of the Chinese people described by Smith becomes a problem. The main part of this paper is divided into five parts. The introduction focuses on the predestination between Smith and China, and the main domestic research methods and basic content of Chinese Characteristics. The first chapter is mainly on the two periods of circulation and acceptance of Chinese Characteristics in China; the second and third chapters analyze the Chinese image from the positive and the distorted sides. Epilogue briefly summarizes the full text and the significance of this paper.
