A Study On The Hierarchy Of Monosyllabic Words Of Locality In Modern Chinese

This magisterial thesis is on case of the hierarchy of monosyllabic words of locality in modern Chinese. According to the Prototype Theory, the object of this study including "east, south, west, north, up, down, forward, backward, left, right, inside, outside, between, among" etc. Besides the function of combination, we also make efforts on find the hierarchy on semantic lever, grammar lever, style lever as well as the cognitive process. To disclose the hierarchy on three aspects:the hierarchy of entirety monosyllabic words of locality system, the hierarchy of those share similar meanings, the hierarchy of those with opposite semantic. The thesis including three parts:the introduction, the research and the conclusion. The research covers seven chapters.Chapter one is about the introduction mainly offers a brief introduction to the scope, theoretical framework, methodology and data source. It also offers a definition of the monosyllabic words of locality in modern Chinese studied here and the exiting studies relevant to this study.The second part includes five chapters, with the ability of combination, syntactic characteristics, semantic, style, cognitive process each being discussed in one chapter.Chapter two is the analysis of the position of these location words when they succeeding a noun or others. Commence with the basic structure which are "X+L" as well as the "L+X" to show that different location words combine with different "X" get different features. For proper location words and words denoting space there are specific conditions. These conditions are analyzed in this chapter.Chapter three is on the syntactic lever, mainly offers the different among these location words when they used into sentences. Independent use of the location words have been discussed, including use as the object of preposition and the subject or object in the sentences as well as to be the adverbial. The "up, down, forward, backward" enjoy a most actively position on this lever.Chapter four is a semantic analysis of these monosyllabic words of locality in modern Chinese. Describing the spatial locative relationships it indicates.Chapter five is on case of the frequency count about the situation of these location words used in different style. According to the data, we find out the advantage style for each location words which also shows the hierarchy of the monosyllabic words of locality in modern Chinese.Chapter six mainly focus on the different cognitive process of each location words. The following conclusions were drawn:when learning these words, different cognitive process will be taken. Each location words get its specialist on the process.The third part is the conclusion of this paper.
