The Study Of Tianjin New Life Movement 1946-1948

"New Life Movement" is a social transformation movement which was implemented in 1934 by Nanjing National Government. This movement is from 1934 to 1949, for 15 years. As an important city in the north of China, Tianjin also carried out some of this movement. But because of the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, Tianjin was occupied, the New Life Movement then terminated. Since the victory of the War in 1945, Tianjin fell out of the war-torn career and returned to the national government's embrace, so the New Life Movement was re-started.Tianjin restarted the New Life Movement in April 1946, although there were some earlier publicity about the New Life Movement, but the movement was not really started. From 8th April 1946 to 14th April, Tianjin held the first New Life Movement Week. Tianjin Municipal Government paid great attention to the New Life Movement, held several of activities during the week.The New Life Movement also enlarged into the district and in order to guide the District's New Life Movement, New Life Movement Association was established in every District. Therefore, New Life Movement is not just stay on the surface of Tianjin.In November 1946, Tu Jianshi became the second mayor of Tianjin after the War, during his tenure, he attached importance to the New Life Movement. During this period, "Conservation Movement" and " Improve the Social Order Movement" became the theme of New Life Movement. "Conservation Movement" is part of the nation-building exercise for national government. Tianjin is not only called for the implementation of conservation but also held a deep check for the results. "Improve the Social Order Movement" is a movement for finishing Tianjin; it mainly contains the compilation of traffic, entertainment places, office condition for the civil service and other aspects in Tianjin. Tianjin carried out this movement to response the national government who called out the implementation of New Life Movement, to organize Tianjin and get achievements, thus establish the credibility of the government and win hearts and minds. Because these two movements are mainly carried out by means of propaganda and persuasion, plus the inadequate preparation, it only found an unsatisfactory result.
