| Deconstructionism began in France at the time of Jacques Derrida's opposition to the thousand-year-old philosophical thinking of the West. As a philosophical theory of critisim, deconstructionism features anti-tradition. With his Italian-American background, Venuti does not follow previous academic thoughts. Instead, he starts from Derrida's deconstruction ideas, builds up his own translation theory, and eventually creates his unique academic system which is different from other translation theories.Venuti does Italian literary works'translation while doing translation theory research. His point is to challenge English speaking countries'cultural hegemony. Inevitably, his literature translation theory deviates from traditional literature translation theories in this process. Venuti's translation theory provides us with a new perspective in thinking about literature translation. Translated works, which should have their own system, are not the subordination of original texts.Using Venuti's deconstructive translation theory, this thesis attempts to interpret the differences between transliteration and paraphrase of names from the translator's actual translation situation in Chi-Chen Wang's Dream of the Red Chamber. The aim is to further greater understanding and mutual appreciation between literary critics and their followers. The thesis begins with an introduction, describing the purpose and method of the research, the literature review, then goes into the body of the thesis. Chapter two focuses on Venuti's deconstructive translation theory in detail: Venuti tries to change the translator's status and economic condition by analyzing thousand years'translation reality. At last, he establishes his own translation theory. Chapter three analyses name translation in Chi-Chen Wang's Dream of the Red Chamber by Venuti's theory. The author starts from the background of Chi-Chen Wang's translation situation, comparing with a former translation. The author argues that Chi-Chen Wang's version is not a mere copy of the former version; on the contrary, his unique name translation enhances the continuity of life inherent in Dream of the Red Chamber. |
