Register is the functional variety of language. It is determined by parameters of context of situation, namely, field of discourse, mode of discourse and tenor of discourse. According to register theory, concrete language varieties are studied under concrete context of situation and context of culture, thus register relates text to context, which provides a theoretical basis for the register equivalence in translation. Equivalence of field of discourse is realized through choices in lexis and selections in transitivity pattern. Equivalence of mode of discourse is realized through degrees of formality and nominalization. Equivalence of tenor of discourse is realized by levels of formality, politeness, impersonality and accessibility. In the process of translation, analysis of the register features in the source text renders great help to translators in understanding the original works, thus realizing the register equivalence between the source text and target text. The thesis proves the feasibility and validity of application of register analysis in translation through the comparative study of two English versions of Teahouse.
