Japanese army sent troops to Shandong, and made the world-shocking Jinan Massacre in May, 1928, in order to hold back the Northern Expedition of Kuomintang troops. This atrocity of Japanese army incensed the Chinese people and a powerful campaign of breaking off relations with Japan was surging all over the country. Facing the gigantic tide of Chinese nationalism, the National Government in Nanjing chose to lead the Chinese people in this campaign in order to control the Chinese mass movement and exert pressure on the Japanese government. Tianjin was an important harbor and a commercial port in North China; therefore, the anti-Japanese campaign developed in Tianjin was bound to expedite the progress of Chinese anti-Japanese movement. At that critical time, Tianjin Anti-Japanese Society was created in obedience to the order of Tianjin local party headquarters and led the campaign of breaking off relations with Japan in Tianjin. For the purpose of health development of this campaign, Tianjin Anti-Japanese Society gradually established various organizations and did a lot of work. It had great achievements while made certain mistakes in handling the fund for saving country. Although Tianjin Anti-Japanese Society encountered some resistance from Japanese goods merchant during the campaign, the fight between Tianjin Anti-Japanese Society who uphold the flag of nationalism and Japanese goods merchant who alleged to protect their essential rights was terminated with the victory of the former. After the Jinan Agreement was signed in March 28, 1929, the National Government in Nanjing turned around against the anti-Japanese organizations, and Tianjin Anti-Japanese Society ended itself up by hasty recombination in response to the order of Tianjin local party headquarters.
